My view of the changes to Starbucks…
I love that they are bringing it back the the roots of coffee … it’s what it should be about … but don’t take away my breakfast sandwich!

Yes, That is my glorious half n half coffee castle in the photo above
Recent chat with a unanimous barista is below…
Barista: Its a good thing they’re taking them away. Trust me.
Me: no way …. it was great for a one stop in the morning food and coffee
Barista: That was the problem. They tried to do too much at once and ended up failing at everything. Very few Baristas anymore have any coffee knowledge. Remember when Starbucks used to actually smell like coffee?? Not burned wax paper? We’re trying to get back to our roots, and thats coffee.
Me: ok so it smells better BUT how much does it take away from coffee …. throwing it in the Lil toaster for a couple seconds …
Barista: Well….(takes deep breath)…..I’m really glad that YOU have that perspective. However, a majority of our customers get really angry when the register person has to leave the register and put something in the over. It isn’t really a problem in the afternoon, but when the line is to the door in the morning and people are running late its a problem. I reality is almost doubles the time to get to the front of the line. (Which in my mind is their own stupid problem because if you don’t’ have enough time to wait in line then you shouldn’t go, but we can’t change that.
As far as taking away from coffee, it makes a really big difference. If you were to walk into a starbucks a few years ago there were very limited pastry options, maybe a few salads made by another company, etc. Coffee was the focus. The fact of the matter is that when you give baristas all these extra “one stop shop” items to worry about then you have taken away from their focus on coffee. Bottom line: our quality was getting out of control bad, so all the extras needed to go out the window. We were losing customers and doing worse THAN STARBUCKS HAD EVER HISTORICALLY DONE. This is a good change, unless you’d rather lose Starbucks and be reliant upon Dunkin Doughnuts, which is where we were headed.
Me: True points made but at the end of the day, well rather in the morning … i want my coffee and sandwich on the run.
